What is CLASSIC99.com?

CLASSIC99.com is a continuation of an important part of the ministry of KFUO Radio, providing rich, classical and sacred music to listeners around the world.

What happened to CLASSIC99 on the radio?

The owners of KFUO-FM/CLASSIC99 sold the station in early 2010. After more than 62 years of broadcasting-the longest-running FM station in St. Louis-KFUO-FM went silent on July 6th, 2010. The loss of the St. Louis region's only voice exclusively dedicated to classical music and the arts left a deep void in the lives of thousands of loyal listeners, and an entire community. KFUO-AM (850) continues to broadcast from the same facilities, located on the Concordia Seminary campus in Clayton, Missouri.

How are you able to continue?

The sale of radio station KFUO-FM involved only the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) broadcast license, the broadcast transmitter and tower, and other items related to terrestrial broadcast operations. The web domain (CLASSIC99.com), the studios and offices, and most other technical equipment and facilities remain at the original location. That is, the infrastructure is available to continue streaming the musical content.

What happened to the music library?

The historic library of CLASSIC99, containing some 30,000 CDs, remains under the watchful care and custodianship of KFUO Radio. It is this library that we are sharing with the world on CLASSIC99.com.

Who is running CLASSIC99.com?

Under the direction of KFUO radio management, volunteers currently manage the operation, and provide the voices and programming that you hear 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. These volunteers include several staff members from the former KFUO-FM.

What's the point? If the station was discarded, why continue?

The vision of the founders of KFUO Radio was to proclaim the Good News of salvation through faith in Christ, within a context that reflects the beauty of the Creator. Since the very first broadcasts in 1924, classical music represented an integral part of the ministry. When FM broadcasting was invented and became widely available, KFUO used their FM radio station as the primary voice to fulfill this part of their mission. This vision still provides incentive for the current volunteers, who see the internet as the 21st century voice for fulfillment if this ministry.

What makes your programming so unique?

The greatest music in the world, written by the legendary composers for concert halls and opera houses, is combined with the great music of the Church, as expressed by believers down through the ages. No terrestrial radio station or internet radio service currently provides this kind of musical mix.

Where can I find a list of your music?

It is not possible to publish our Playlist at the current time. This is a major issue, and our goal is to have a Playlist very soon. "Stay tuned."
