Missouri Botanical Garden

Now through October “Chapungu: Nature, Man, and Myth.”
An extraordinary collection of 23 contemporary African stone carvings of people, animals and creatures of legend by the Shona artists of Zimbabwe. Sculptures represent a traditional African family’s attitude and close bond to nature and the environment, and the myths and legends that enrich the Shona culture. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Exhibition is primarily outdoors. Smaller works are on display and sold inside the Brookings Center, adjacent to the Climatron. Included with admission or membership. On Thursday evenings, “Chapungu Nights” present music and special entertainment, cocktails and outdoor dining at the Sassafras café. “Chapungu Nights” admission $10 ($5 Garden members). “Great Green Adventures,” drop-in family programs every Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each week focuses on nature study, nutrition and exercise. Discover water and giant koi fish in the Japanese Garden on Aug. 4; examine plants and animals from the Children’s Garden pond on Aug. 11; make a shower timer as a Sustainability Superhero” at the EarthWays Center on Aug. 18; and make a homemade rope and nautical knots in the Children’s Garden on Aug. 25. Look for “Great Green Adventures” in the Children’s Garden on the second and fourth Saturdays, and at other locations on the other Saturdays. Aug. 18 “Best Homegrown Tomato Challenge,”
sponsored by NatureSweet. Two $2,500 grand prizes will be awarded to the gardeners whose large and small homegrown tomatoes are judged the overall best. Runners-up prizes TBD. Contestant entry forms will be available this summer at local Schnucks, Dierbergs and Shop ’n Save grocery stores. Registration begins at 9 a.m.; judging at 11:30 a.m. Winners announced at noon. The Kingsbury Ensemble Grigg Gallery 6:00 – 8:30 pm Free Join us for an evening of French salon music with the Midwest’s premier early-music group, the Kingsbury Ensemble. Popular in France during the time of Napoleon, salon music was typically played at informal musical gatherings in private residencies. The Kingsbury Ensemble brings the French salon to life in the Museum’s Grigg Gallery when it performs music composed by Beethoven and his contemporaries on period instruments.

Join Joseph D. Horse Capture to discuss these exceptional works made by the people of the Northern and Southern Plains between 1850 and 1890. Horse Capture is the author of Beauty, Honor, and Tradition: The Legacy of Plains Indian Shirts. A visit to the exhibition Plains Indian Beadwork from the Donald Danforth Jr. Collection follows this lecture.

Archaeological Institute of America Lecture Series
Rescue on the Euphrates: Results of Excavations at the Roman Frontier City of Zeugma William Aylward, Associate Professor of Classics, University of Wisconsin–Madison Auditorium 7:00 pm Free The ancient city of Zeugma caught the world’s attention in the summer of 2000, when nearly half of the site was flooded by water from a reservoir near a new dam on the Euphrates River in Turkey. The Packard Humanities Institute of Los Altos, California answered the call to help save the archaeological site from the rising water, and an international collaborative effort arose to document the rescue excavations and publish the findings. In this lecture, William Aylward, editor for the publication, will recount the rescue work and share the latest results of Zeugma research, focusing on life in the riverfront city.

Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (TAI) is a non-profit organization with 51 chapters nationwide dedicated to honoring the accomplishments and perpetuating the history of African Americans who participated in aircrew, ground crew and operations support training in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Join Joseph Robinson, president of the Hugh J. White Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. in St. Louis, for a presentation and video followed by Q&A related to these legendary heroes.

This inspiring World War II story spotlights 450 men who fought on two fronts at once, battling the Axis powers in Europe and North Africa, and taking on racism at home. The Tuskegee Airmen made more than 15,000 sorties and 1,500 missions, and their success led to the integration of the U.S. armed forces.
