Lyceum

September 5 – 16 Smoke on the Mountain, The Homecoming
It’s October, 1945, and the gospel-singing Sanders Family is back together again. Smoke on the Mountain – Homecoming runs September 5 through September 16 and reunites Lyceum audiences with some of their most beloved characters. The war is over and America’s years of prosperity are just beginning in this third installment of the Smoke on the Mountain series. But there’s another kind of rite of passage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. He’s been called to preach in Texas, he’s bought a ten-gallon hat and he is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Tomorrow morning, young Dennis Sanders takes over as Mount Pleasant’s pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with hilarious and touching stories and old Bluegrass Gospel favorites.
September 26 – October 7 Children of a Lesser God
After three years in the Peace Corps, James, a young speech therapist, joins the faculty of a school for the deaf, where he is to teach lip-reading. He meets Sarah, a school dropout, totally deaf from birth, and estranged both from the world of the hearing and from the deaf who would compromise by living in the hearing world. Fluent in sign language, James tries, with little success, to help Sarah, but gradually the two fall in love. But, will the worlds of sound and silence prove too great to reconcile? Or, will love and compassion overcome all? Children of a Lesser God is a stirring drama, rich with challenging ideas and humanity. “This is one of my favorite plays about that most human difficulty, communication,” says Gresham. “Not only will we at the Lyceum have the opportunity to work on this wonderful piece and share it with our audience next year, but we will also have the opportunity to work with a group of talented hard of hearing and deaf artists. I’m extremely excited about this ambitious project!”
