One on my personal list of top ten musicals of all time, The Fantasticks
proves to be as enduring as ever as the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis
presents it as their final production of the season. This Tom Jones and Harvey
Schmidt creation is the longest running musical in New York history with a
celebration this year of its 50th anniversary. Stalwart musical director Victoria Bussert brings the magic of The Fantasticks to life with a vibrant production worthy of the romance, mystery and charm that has made it a favorite of many throughout the years. It's a simple love story that's almost naïve yet also worldly wise. It brings so many elements together that make live theatre as great as it is. You simply have to see it to appreciate it's simplicity yet it's vast scope. Brian Sutherland returns to the Rep stage as the romantic cad, El Gallo who leads our couple on their adventure. His magnificent baritone and impish characterization makes the show work. Cory Michael Smith and Stella Heath are admirable as the young couple and their fathers are simply perfect as portrayed by Scott Schafer and Dan Sharkey. As always, Rep veteran Joneal Joplin gives an acting lesson as the aged Shakespearean actor. As his parting lines intone- there are no small actors, only small parts. And he takes this small part and just about steals the show. John Woodson, as his sidekick with a strange specialty, is just great. Rounding out the cast is a delightful Sara M. Bruner as the Mute who does everything from portraying the most essential "wall" to bringing a shrewd eye to the surroundings. The simple and effective set design of Gary M. English is just right and the strong lighting of Peter E. Sargent enhances the entire production. This is a show that should play more often on area stages. We haven't seen it grace a stage in some time and it is truly missed. I'm so glad you've got a chance to see this timeless piece of musical history as The Fantasticks plays at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis through April11th. This is Steve Allen with theatre in our town for CLASSIC99. |
