| A classic recently
received an update and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is the first
to present this new version of The Diary of Anne Frank. Giving perhaps a
more realistic view of what may have happened over the almost two year period
in Amsterdam during World War II, this cast brings us a powerful look at this
horrific period in history. When the Jews were being persecuted and eventually eliminated by the Nazi party in Europe, the Frank and van Daan families sought refuge in the upper floors of Otto Frank's office building. Assisted by two Jewish sympathizers, they escaped the wrath of Hitler's plan until they were discovered, ironically just as the Allies were beginning to liberate Europe. The account of their ordeal was documented by the 13 year old Anne Frank. As Anne, an older and accomplished actress, Lauren Orkus, gives an incredible performance showing the giddiness and youthful zeal of the young Anne. Veteran Rep performer, John Rensenhouse is perfect as Otto with a demure Ann Talman as Anne's mother and Maggie Wetzel turning in a fine performance as Anne's sister. As their saviors, Maura Kidwell and Jerry Vogel are superb. Andrew Stroud is a sensitive young Peter van Daan while Peter Van Wagner and Peggy Billo shine as the van Daan's. And Gary Wayne Barker is excellent as the eccentric dentist who joins them in hiding. The Rep Artistic Director handles the stage direction on The Diary of Anne Frank with sensitivity and a keen eye to this new adaptation which really gives a whole new perspective to this classic story. The elaborate and effective set design by John Ezell is a piece of art while the rest of the artistic staff also does wonders. This is a story that endures because of the unbelievable time and circumstances that surround this bleak time in history. The horror that was the Holocaust lives on and Anne Frank's story will always be at the heart of it. Don't miss this wonderful retelling of The Diary of Anne Frank playing at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis through March 7th.
